6-Months After the Move the New Home of the East Orange Family Success Center Welcomes More Families in Need
The East Orange Family Success Center is increasing literacy proficiency using creative parent/child bonding activities through its Sankofa Academy. With over 15 families regularly attending, nearly 35 children are actively reading with their families during non-program hours.
Known as the Sankofa Reading Club, parents and children are provided with free age-appropriate books they read together and subsequently participate in creative activities using the central theme of the books. The techniques enhance family bonding and encourages positive cultural identity.
In addition, the Academy sponsors the Barbershop Read-to-Lead Program. This is an incentive-focused program where children receive free or discounted haircut from local barbers, when they read a book during their visit. The waiting area allows children to select a book and read it with their parent or another customer.
The Sankofa Academy allows us to effectively engage parents and involve them in their child’s education by improving children’s language skills.
