In honor of Women’s History Month, the East Orange Family Success Center and family participants in the center’s Sankofa Reading Club hosted a “Meet the Author” event with Ilyasah Shabazz, the third daughter of Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz. The families read Ilyasah’s best-selling book, “Betty Before X,” and invited her to meet parents and children from the local community.
Ilyasah, a professor at John Jay University, is an accomplished best-selling author, community organizer, social activist, and motivational speaker. In this latest book, Ilyasah illuminates four poignant years in her mother’s childhood, painting an inspiring portrait of a girl overcoming the challenges of self-acceptance and belonging that resonates with young readers today. “When you educate a girl, you raise a nation,” says Ilyasah Shabazz, an inspirational role model and advocate for women and girl empowerment. Her lifework is devoted to helping others find inner strength and purpose. While she is frequently asked to speak about the legacy of Malcolm X, she shares that it is her mother Dr. Betty Shabazz’s wisdom, courage and compassion that guide her.
Over 150 people attended the book signing, which was held March 14, 2018 at St. Joseph Plaza in Newark, New Jersey. Della Crews, anchor for News 12 New Jersey, moderated the event. Della invited several children from the Sankofa Reading Club, to come up and ask Ilyasah questions about the book.
The IFS East Orange Family Success Center offers programs that brings young families together by helping parents teach their children a love of reading. The Sankofa Reading Club is a component of the Center’s Sankofa Academy and provides families with free culturally appropriate books, creative opportunities for families to read together, and planned trips to the library for workshops, literacy training and positive cultural identity enhancement activities.
