East Orange Family Success Center Launches
“Read-to-Lead” Barber Shop Literacy Campaign
Barber shop owners are getting involved and giving back by helping children learn the love of reading. Called the “Read-to-Lead” program, local barbers are giving young boys discounted, or free haircuts if they read out loud while getting their hair cut.
Initiated by the East Orange Family Success (EOFSC), and in partnership with Ted Green, Council President and the East Orange City Council, the program involves setting up a reading nook in each shop complete with books, a book shelf, and a child-friendly table with chairs as their own waiting area.
Our hope is to encourage children to read more and begin to enjoy reading. The books range from colorful picture books to more challenging story-based books. The children are also asked questions about what they read to encourage comprehension and discussion.
Early signs show promising results! In its first few days, the children expressed pride in reading out loud and loved it!
